Laura Larraz

Laura Larraz (b. 1989, Zaragoza, Spain) lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Recent solo exhibitions include Kleines Arschloch, Chris Sharp Gallery, Los Angeles (2026), and Wyrds, Chris Sharp Gallery, Los Angeles (2023). Recent group exhibitions include Trespass sweetly urged, Tanya Leighton, Berlin (2024); The Cave, Le Maximum, Los Angeles (2022); and The Maestro says it's Mozart but it sounds like bubble gum, Gattopardo, Los Angeles (2022).

Larraz's paintings move between two interrelated bodies of work: fighting cats, rendered on large white canvases in an outrageous welter of marks, and sobbing angels, painted with similar violence on smaller, pendant-like canvases directly inspired by Giotto's lamentation in the Scrovegni Chapel. Channeling influences from Goya to Almodóvar, her work stages an explosive, cathartic pictorial rage that shades into laughter, touching on questions of taste, the Western canon, camp as critical strategy, and the legacy of action painting pictures that are timely as they are timeless, and that move in every direction at once.
